Charlie Byrne’s in Galway; the best book shop I’ve ever been to and where we get our favourite kids books

I’m a bit late in the day with this but I said I’d do a small post on Aidan and Sarah’s favourite books considering it’s World Book Day.

Sarah has only recently taken an interest in books and boy does she love them. She adores when we read to her. Her favourite thing to do is sit in my bed on a Saturday morning and have me read her favourite stories to her.

Favourite kids books: Dear Zoo, a classic

At the moment she is particularly obsessed with two books in particular. The first is a classic. It’s Dear Zoo by Rod Campbell. At this stage she knows every last word of it off by heart but I still have to read it to her every single night at bed time.

If you’re not familiar with it, it’s about a letter to the zoo from someone looking for a pet. This results in a few different pets being dispatched to the writer and all bar one are suitable. The camel is too grumpy, the monkey is to naughty, the frog is too jumpy but in the end the puppy is perfect.

Sarah loves lifting the flaps on each delivery and loves making the animal noses even more when she reveals what is in each package. She’s particularly loves acting like a naughty monkey when she gets to that page!

Favourite kids books: The Pigeon Wants a Puppy!

Her second favourite book is a totally bizarre one called The Pigeon Wants a Puppy by an author by the name of Mo Willems. It’s, as you expect, about a pigeon that wants a puppy, eventually gets one, is freaked out by said puppy and then decides he wants a walrus instead. Sarah thinks it is utterly hilarious!

Favourite kids books: Where’s Wally?

Moving on to Aidan, well he’s a huge fan of Julia Donaldson’s The Gruffalo, which needs no introduction. He also loves Where’s Wally and seek and find books in general.

Favourite kids books: Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot

He also loves me to read the Ricky Ricotta’s Mighty Robot series by Dav Pilkey. He has three of the series, which are about Ricky, a lonely little mouse who befriends a giant robot, takes on all sorts of bad folk and saves the day every time. Perfect fodder for my little boy!

And finally, we always like to support Irish businesses. I know we live in Kildare but we buy all our books for Charlie Byrne’s book shop in Galway. It’s amazing and their sheer range of books they have is incredible. The kids love going in there and we’ve often spent a whole Saturday afternoon in it if we are visit the grandparents in Galway.

It’s well worth a visit the next time you’re out west, I can assure you.

PS: Speaking of favourites have a look at this cool little kitchen gadget that I’ve come to love.
