Summer has arrived! Praise the Lord! And June is on the way so I thought I’d put together a list of free family days out in Kildare for the month.
Whether it’s woodland walks, street entertainment, farms or storytelling you’re in to, there’s plenty of free family days out and events on in the Shortgrass County to keep you occupied.
I’ve compiled a list of free family days out that we’d be interested in but please feel free to comment with other suggestions. My list runs in no particular order.
‘Old MacDonald had a Farm’ at Newbridge Library, Friday, June 9 (10.30am)
This event at Newbridge Library is for children five year and under. Children can pop along to hear barnyard stories. There will also be music, bubbles, colouring and lots of fun for little ones.
Booking is required and you can contact the library on 045-448353 or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
June Fest Street Party, June 5 (1pm)
As part of the ever popular Newbridge June Fest the street party returns once again this year. There is a variety of free fun activities planned for all the family. There will be arts and crafts, music, dancing, face painting and food stalls. The Garda open day will also take place on the day.
Kildare Farm Foods
Kildare Farm Foods is open all year round and is always worth a visit. Entry in to the open farm is free. Pigs, sheep, ostrich, goats, camels, ducks, hens, alpacas and many more animals will be there to greet you. For a small fee you can take a ride round the farm on the train or even play crazy golf. Oh and don’t forget to stop for a cuppa in the coffee shop before you go home. This is one of the best free family days out there is. Trust me.
The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe Craft Workshop, June 10 (10.30am to 12pm)
Marta Golubowska will be running this exciting craft workshop based on the popular classic The Lion Witch and Wardrobe by CS Lewis at Newbridge Library.
In this workshop children will use their imagination and the stories of Narnia to make a wonderful wardrobe made of card with pop-up shapes inside!
The event is suitable for five-year-olds and up. Booking is required and you can do so by calling the library on 045-448353 or by emailing email@example.com.
Just a mile outside Rathangan, Killinthomas Wood is a 200 acre amenity with 10km of signposted walks. Entry is totally free and in spring and early summer the woods are covered with bluebells and wild garlic. It is one of the few yet to be discovered areas of outstanding natural beauty in Kildare.
Diary of a Wimpy Kid – Create your own Diary, June 17 (11am to 12am)
Teacher, artist and storyteller Sarah Tully will be giving this book-themed craft workshop which ties in with the popular series by Jeff Kinney ‘Diary of a Wimpy Kid’.
During the workshop children will get to create their own ‘Wimpy Kid’ diary while also learning about the background to the book and the characters in it. The event is suitable for children aged from 8 to 12 and takes place, once again, in Newbridge Library. Call 045-448353 to book or email firstname.lastname@example.org.
Family Movie, June 24 (10.30am)
Come along for a surprise screening of a family friendly movie in Newbridge Library. Children must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Booking is required. Call 045-448353 to book or email email@example.com.
Visit the grounds of the stunning Castletown House in Celbridge and explore the parkland and river walks. On the first Wednesday of every month tours of the 18th century Palladian style mansion are free. For a small fee you can now rent a bike beside the entrance to the farmyard and explore the parklands and Celbridge village. There is also a cafe in the courtyard of the house.
And there’s just a few events and free family days out in Kildare to keep you busy in June. We are always looking for things to do and see so please feel free to let me know of other events happening nearby.
